Quantum computing toward scalability and connectivity

To mark the official launch of Taiwan’s International Year of Quantum Science and Technology (IYQ), the Physical Society of Taiwan (TPS) and the Physics Research Promotion Center (PRPC) will host a grand lighting ceremony at Taipei 101 on Saturday, April 12, 2025, at 6:30 PM TST / 10:30 AM UTC. This symbolic event will usher in a year-long series of quantum science outreach and celebration activities.

Quantum computing represents a revolutionary computational paradigm. Leveraging quantum properties like superposition, entanglement, and interference, it can dramatically accelerate solutions for specific problems, influencing future technology, society, and industry. As quantum devices surpass the 100-qubit threshold, the opportunities to solve complex problems in fields such as Quantum physics and chemistry, quantum machine learning, and combinatorial optimization are becoming increasingly tangible. However, the path to achieving practical quantum utility is still fraught with challenges, from error mitigation/correction and scalability to algorithm development and hardware integration.

A research team led by National Tsing Hua University Department of Physics and Center for Quantum Science and Technology professor Chuu Chih-sung (褚志崧) has developed Taiwan’s first and the world’s smallest quantum computer, using a single photon, the university said yesterday.

Groundbreaking developments in the quantum field are not only a major success in scientific research, but have also opened up possibilities for cross-disciplinary applications and business opportunities.
